Cafe Project_Redesigning the Marmont Cafe
This group project was about adapting the Marmont Cafe, at Nottingham school of the built environment, to make it more suited to students requirments and desires.
The approach that we took was a reaction to the opening hours and the creation of a space linked to the cafe that would function into the night to provide facilities for those working late in studio. The project was centred around the insertion of an element which sloted into the existing cafe making very little alteration to the existing building programme and structure of th cafe.
The idea behind the intervention was to create somewhere to go at night when working late in studio to get coffee and to have a sleep. The upper level contains an open floor for sleeping on and is in complete darkness with no openings. The lower level, beneath ground is flooded with fluorescent strip lighting which creates and energetic and intense atmosphere. In this space there is only a kettle which can be used to make coffee/tea.
