Willenhall_House Project

The project is about forming a building out of what surrounds it on the site.  The building uses elements of the immediate environment including materials, form and lighting condition to carve out a series of spaces which are used to dwell in.  The way that the reclaimed elements are used, and the relationship they hold with each other aims to create a building that does not conform to the preconceived idea of a typology so that the building is read as an amalgamation of its location.

Views of the surroundings are also important in the design as the shape and direction of the circulation spaces act to emphasise particular views and allow the occupant to experience the juxtaposition of building typologies that would not usually occur.  These views become part of the façade and may include views into windows of surrounding buildings bringing the activities of that building into the spaces.

The hierarchy between the materials, form, mood, lighting condition, views and function is what creates the perception of a building without a typology.  Some elements are more prominent in certain spaces, which means there is no simple way to read the building as a house both externally and internally.
